When Does It Snow in Budapest?

The highest chance for snow in Budapest is from December to February. It usually doesn’t snow in December anymore, and if there is snowfall, it tends to snow in January or February.

Generally, even if it snows, it is a light snowfall and it doesn’t remain for long and melts away.

Nevertheless, if you are in Budapest and it snows, make sure to go and explore the city as it looks stunning in the snow!

How Much Snow Does Budapest Get?

Usually, it is rare to get proper snow in Budapest, and since the 1980s, Budapest only had big snowfalls a few times in 1987, 2013, and 2026. During these times, the snow lasted several days.

There is a chance of snowfall in every year, but it is usually only a light snowfall and doesn’t last long.

Best Things to Do in Budapest When it Snows

Go for a Walk in the City Center

It’s rare for it to truly snow in Budapest, but when it does, the best thing to do is to go outside and see the city in snow!

Most of the time, it doesn’t snow that much in Budapest but when it does (once in a decade), I love to go see the city in snow and walk around the famous attractions. It starts to feel cold really fast, so dress up in warm layers, and take breaks in cafés to warm up.

To see some of the most famous places in Budapest in the snow, you can start walking from Deák Ferenc Square to the St. Stephen’s Basilica, then to the Parliament, and from there, go down to the river Danube Bank.

The Parliament is so pretty in the snow, and once you get to the River Danube, you get to see over to the Buda side as well, and you can see the Buda Castle, Gellért Hill, and the Fisherman’s Bastion in snow.

From the riverbank, continue towards the Chain Bridge, you will pass by the Shoes on the Danube memorial. I found it was very slippery walking on the snow by the riverbank, so be careful not to slip into the river.

Once you get to the Chain Bridge, I recommend crossing the bridge on foot and then to go up to the Buda Castle by Funicular. From here, you get great views of Pest covered in snow, and you can also walk over to the Fisherman’s Bastion.

I have done this walk in about 2-3 hours (without going inside the attractions), and it’s a good walk. As it was snowing, I felt really cold, so I didn’t spend much time at each place. If you have more time, you can split the walk into two: visit the attractions in Pest on one day, and then go to Buda the next day.

Warm Up in the Thermal Baths

Budapest is well-known for its thermal baths and is also referred to as the “City of Spas”. The thermal baths have both warm and cold water baths and relaxing in the baths is one of the best things to do when it is cold outside.

The two most popular thermal baths in Budapest are Széchenyi Thermal Bath and Gellért Thermal Bath. (Please note that the Gellért Bath is currently closed for renovation until 2028)

The Széchenyi Thermal Bath is one of my favourites, as it is the biggest bath in Budapest with 18 pools. I love that there are different types of pools to choose from, as well as saunas, steam rooms, and massage services. It can get a bit busy due to its popularity, but it is definitely worth visiting.

Other thermal baths include Lukács Bath, Rudas Bath, Veli Bej Bath, Dandár Bath. They are a bit smaller than Széchenyi, but the good thing is that they don’t get that busy either.

Book a day ticket to the Széchenyi Baths, and relax in the warm thermal pools!

Go Ice Skating

During winter, lots of ice skating rinks are set up across Budapest. A local’s favourite is the ice skating rink at the City Park, which is the largest outdoor ice skating rink in Europe!

There is a big lake at the City Park: in the summer, you can go boating, while in the winter, they turn the lake into an ice skating rink.

I remember coming here since I was a kid, and it’s such a nice place for ice skating. You are surrounded by the park, and there is also a castle (Vajdahunyad Castle) next to the rink.

The busiest time is on the weekends, so to avoid the crowds, I would plan to visit in the mornings on a weekday.

Sip Mulled Wine at the Christmas Markets

It usually doesn’t snow in Budapest during Christmas anymore, so it’s very rare to have both snow and the Christmas Markets, but if you are lucky, you may be able to experience both!

The Budapest Christmas Markets are magic. They have tasty chimney cake, mulled wine and handmade products. It’s the perfect place to get into the Christmas festive vibes – especially if it snows.

The two biggest Christmas Markets in Budapest are the Vörösmarty Square Christmas Market and Basilica Christmas Market. They close on 1 January, but some smaller Christmas markets are open later in January.

Ultimately, there is a higher likelihood of snow in January, so you may have the chance to visit a smaller Christmas Market when it snows.

One time I was very lucky as I happened to visit Budapest in winter, and although it only started snowing properly in mid-January, a small Christmas Market was still open at Deák Ferenc Square. There are only a few market stalls here, but it is so pretty when it snows.

Warm Up in a Café

Winter in Budapest, especially when it snows, can be very cold. Sometimes, it can even get to -10°C (14°F) during the day, so it’s important to keep warm.

Even if I dress in warm layers, it feels so cold outside after 1-2 hours that I need to warm up with a nice tea or coffee.

So, it’s always a good idea to take a break and warm up in a café when it’s snowing and cold outside. Two of my favourite cafés in Budapest are the New York Café and the Parisi Udvar.

The New York Café is called as the most beautiful café in the world, as it has beautiful interior inside. Honestly, having a coffee here feels like having a coffee in a palace. It’s a very trendy place, so the prices are higher than a usual café in Budapest but coming here once is worth it!

The Parisi Udvar is similar to the New York Café, as in, it has also beautiful interior. The prices are lower than at the New York Café, so it is a good alternative.

Play in the Snow

When it starts to snow, everyone in Budapest heads out into the snow. Whether it’s just going for a walk in the snow, build a snowman, or go all in on a snowball fight.

There is a park in Budapest near the Deak Ferenc Square, the Erzsébet Square, which is a good place for kids to play in the snow. Recently, there was a big snowfall in Budapest (one that we haven’t had for almost 15 years), and when I passed by Erzsébet tér, I saw so many kids playing in the snow. It reminded of my own childhood, when we used to get lots of snow all throughout winter.

A little bit further out from the city center, there is a place called Normafa, and it is a very popular place to go sledding or even skiing.

Go on a River Cruise

Going on a river cruise on the Danube is one of the most iconic things to do in Budapest. Even if you are just in Budapest for a few days, a cruise is a must-do.

The river cruises leave near the city center and there are various options, including daytime and evening cruises, as well as dinner or drinks cruises.

I love going on a boat tour in Budapest as you can see many of the famous attractions (Parliament, Buda Castle) as the boat goes up and down on the river. My favourite time to go on a cruise is in the evening, when you can see the building in the evening light.

In the winter, the boats are heated inside. Only if you go out onto the deck, then it’s going to be very cold.

I once went on a dinner cruise with my colleagues as a gift from our office right before Christmas and the city just looked magical in the evening. We even stood outside for a bit on the deck, and even though it was super cold, the city looked so beautiful!

I recommend booking an evening cruise, so you get to see the city in the evening lights!

Go to a Museum Exhibition

There are many museums in Budapest and going to a museum exhibition is a great way to escape the cold!

Some of the best museums are the Museum of Fine Arts, Hall of Arts, Museum of Ethnography, and House of Music. These four museums are also located close to each other (near the Heroes’ Square), so you can visit a couple of museums in one go.

I like visiting museums when it snows, as during that time, the museums are less busy. When it’s snowing, people either stay at home or go to a park to play in the snow.

Best Places for Snow Near Budapest

If you spend a longer time in Budapest and want to visit places outside the city, there are few places that are worth visiting when it snows!

Popular winter escapes close to the capital include Dobogó-kő in the Visegrád Mountains, and Kékestető and Mátraszentistván in the Mátra Mountains – all of which work well as day trips but are also worth a longer stay if you want to explore at a slower pace.

These spots combine nature, winter sports, and easy access from Budapest, making them ideal for a short winter getaway. The best is to hire a car, so you can go and leave whenever it’s best for you.

Dobogókő is one of the closest options, just 40 km away from Budapest, and is known for its scenic hiking trails and small ski area, making it a great choice for a quick nature break.

Kékestető, Hungary’s highest point, sits in the Mátra Hills and offers both hiking and multiple ski runs, though it’s best reached by car for a smooth day trip.

If it is snowing, visiting Lake Balaton is a unique experience. Usually, the high season to visit the lake is during summer, however, if it snows and the lake freezes, then it is a very rare occurrence that can be beautiful to visit. Don’t go on the frozen lake though as it can break under you.

Tips for Visiting Budapest When It Snows

Dress in Warm Layers

In the winter when it snows, it can get really cold in Budapest, and the temperature may even drop down to -10°C (14°F) or lower during the day.

So, if you visit Budapest when it’s really cold then make sure to dress in warm layers. The best is to wear tights under your trousers, thick socks, boots, long-sleeved T-shirt, jumper, and a thick winter coat.

In the winter in Budapest, I easily get cold after 1-2 hours outside even when I dress in warm layers. So, it’s good to take some breaks, and go to a café to warm up if you feel very cold.

Be Careful Not to Slip

When it snows, it gets very slippery outside. The pavements are snowy and can also become icy.

When the snow and ice start to melt, then it becomes slippery as the pavements are like snow mixed with water. So be careful when walking outside on the pavements and stairs.

Be Careful when Crossing the Road

Also, be careful when crossing the road as there can be a lot of melted snow between the pavement and the road. It’s like a dirty puddle, so look for a place to cross the road where there is less puddle.

When waiting at the zebra crossing, step further away from the road because the cars passing by can splash the dirty, snowy puddle on you if you are standing too close.

Drive Carefully

In case you are driving in Budapest when it snows, then drive very carefully. Check that your car has winter tires, otherwise it’s dangerous to drive on the slippery roads.

This winter we had a lot of snow in Budapest, and I saw so many cars struggling on the roads. I saw a couple of accidents, and cars and trucks stopping in the middle of the road, trying to decide what’s best to do. So, make sure to drive very slowly when it snows.

I recommend booking an accommodation in the city center of Budapest, so that the famous attractions are in walking distance.

My perfect day in Budapest in snow would be to start the day by going for breakfast at the New York Café (most beautiful café in the world) and then go for a walk to see the city in the snow.

Major attractions in the city center can be walked, and you can visit places such as the St. Stephen’s Basilica, Parliament, River Danube, Chain Bridge, Buda Castle, and Fisherman’s Bastion in 2-3 hours walk.

Budapest is known for its beautiful architecture, and I love it the most when it is snowing. The city is beautiful, but be careful as the pavements and roads are very slippery. Make sure to dress in very warm layers, and stop for a tea break when it’s starting to feel too cold.
