Best Time to Visit

The market gets the busiest in the evenings and on the weekends, as that’s also the time when most of the locals have free time to visit. So, if you want to avoid the biggest crowds, it’s better to visit the market on a weekday.

One time we came just before opening times, and while there was barely anyone before 11 am, just as 11 am came around and the stalls opened, lots of people arrived. Still the crowd in the morning is much less than the crowds later during the day or in the evenings.

It might be busy in the evenings, but it’s also one of the best times to visit market. Just after the sun goes down in late afternoon, you get to see the market with the Christmas lights on. There is also a light show every half an hour in the evenings that you shouldn’t miss.

So, even though the market tends to be busy in the evenings and on the weekends, you shouldn’t skip it just because of the crowds. The only thing I recommend is looking after your belongings (phone, wallet) as petty theft can happen.

What to Expect at the Market

The Christmas Market at the St. Stephen’s Basilica started in 2011 in Budapest, and since then, it has been voted as the best Christmas Market in Europe four times in 2019, 2021, 2022, and 2023.

I love the Basilica Christmas Market because it has lots of stalls selling Hungarian delicacies and Christmas souvenirs, and it has lots of events like light shows and live music. It’s the perfect place to get into the Christmas festive season!

There is another Christmas market in Budapest at the Vörösmarty Square, and the two markets make up the two most popular Christmas Markets in Budapest. They are located close to each other, so you can visit both in a day.

Food & Drinks

The food is just so yummy at the market, and they have lots of Christmas food and Hungarian delicacies. They have everything from Goulash soup and sausages to stuffed cabbage and lángos. We had some lángos, it’s a traditional Hungarian snack made of deep fried dough with sour cream and cheese on top.

There are also lots of desserts at the market like chimney cake, flódni (pastry traditionally made with walnuts and poppy seeds), and strudel (pastry traditionally made with apple fillings).

There is also lots of mulled wine, because, what is a Christmas market without mulled wine?

Food and Drink Prices at the Basilica Christmas Market:

The prices are generally higher at the Christmas market than as if you were eating at a local restaurant. We were on a budget, so we just had some mulled wine and snacks at the market, and went for food at a nearby restaurant.

Handicrafts & Souvenirs

There are also lots of stalls selling handicrafts and traditional Hungarian items that are great for souvenirs to take back home. There are stalls selling jewellery, clothes with Hungarian embroidery, and leather goods (wallets, bags).

They also sell Hungarian delicacies like paprika spice powder, and Hungarian wine and spirits. There is a popular Hungarian spirit, Pálinka, which is one of the strongest Hungarian alcoholic drinks. It comes in fruity flavours, like plum, pear, and apricot, and it’s a great gift to take a bottle back home.

Entertainment & Atmosphere

Apart from the food and drinks, there are also many events and activities at the market. There is an ice rink (best for kids), they have a 3D light show after sunset, and they also organize live music concerts and folk dance shows. There is usually also an event with Santa Claus at the market for a day in December (usually on 5 or 6 December).

The 3D light show starts from 17:30 pm, and there is a show every half an hour until 10 pm. They mostly show Christmas animations. You can get 3D glasses from the stalls, but we just watched it without the glasses and we still enjoyed it.

The ice rink is pretty small, so don’t have high expectations, but it can be fun for kids. It’s free for kids under 14, and you can also rent the skates for free for kids.

How to Get There

The Advent Basilica Christmas Market is located at the St. Stephen’s Basilica in central Budapest. It is in the city center, and there are many bus and metro stops nearby.

Budapest has lots of neighbourhoods, but if you stay in the city center, then most likely, you can just walk to the Basilica and Christmas Market (without needing to take a taxi or public transport).

If you are staying further out from the city center, take the Metro Line 3 to ‘Arany János utca’, it’s the closest metro stop to the Basilica. Another nearby metro stop is the ‘Deák Ferenc tér’ station by the metro lines 1, 2 and 3. From ‘Deák Ferenc tér’, you can walk to the Basilica Christmas Market in 5 minutes.

Where to Stay near the Budapest Basilica

There are many hotels near the St. Stephen’s Basilica in Budapest, and staying in an area nearby makes it pretty easy to explore not just the Basilica Christmas Market, but other attractions as well.

The area around the Basilica is full of restaurants, cafes, and other historic places, like the Parliament, Shoes on the Danube memorial, Margaret Island, or you can even walk across one of the bridges to Buda.

There are two major Christmas markets in Budapest, the one at the Basilica, and another one at the Vörösmarty Square. I recommend staying in a hotel that is located in walking distance to both Christmas markets. This way, you can explore both markets easily, as well as the attractions in the city center.

The St. Stephen’s Basilica is the largest church in Budapest, and it is also a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The inside of the Basilica is pretty epic, and if you are at the Basilica Christmas Market, it is totally worth going inside and checking out the church.

You can also get a special ticket to go up to the top of the Basilica from where you get awesome views of Budapest.

Vörösmarty Square Christmas Market

Another popular Christmas Market in Budapest is the Christmas Market at the Vörösmarty Square. It’s just around 10 minutes walk from the Basilica, so you can check out both Christmas market in one go.

It’s similar to the Basilica Christmas Market. They have similar food and handicrafts stalls, but I found that the one at the Basilica has a wider selection of food and handicrafts.

Parliament

The Parliament is one of the most iconic places in Budapest and it is very close to the St. Stephen’s Basilica. From the Basilica, you can walk to the Parliament in just a few minutes.

To visit the Parliament inside, you have to pre-book a ticket. It’s very popular, so it’s best to book it months in advance to make sure you have a ticket. Otherwise, if you are not that interested to go inside, you can just see the building from the outside – it looks cool even from the outside and it’s free.

Danube River Walk or Cruise

The Basilica is very close to the Danube riverbank, and after exploring the market, I recommend going down to the riverbank. The city is really beautiful by the Danube, and you also get to see across the river to Buda. The Buda Castle and Fisherman’s Bastion look epic from the Pest side.

Apart from walking along the river, you can also go on a river cruise. Actually, going on a river cruise in Budapest is one of the best things to do in the city! It’s great all throughout the year, and in the winter, the boats are heated so you don’t feel cold.

My Final Advice for Visiting the Basilica Christmas Market

When visiting the Basilica Christmas Market, it’s best to prepare for the crowds. It’s one of the best Christmas markets in Budapest, and it tends to get very busy, especially in the evenings and on the weekends. Petty crimes like theft is common in Budapest, so watch out for your belongings and valuables.

It can also get cold, so make sure to dress in warm layers. I wore thermal layers, a thick winter coat, and winter boots, but still started to feel cold after a while. It’s nice to have hot drinks (tea, hot chocolate, mulled wine) to keep you warm.

The prices tend to be higher than in general shops or restaurants, so if you are on a budget, it’s better to shop in regular shops outside of the Christmas market.

As for accommodation, the best hotels near the Basilica and Christmas markets tend to get booked out in advance, so make sure to book your preferred hotel well ahead in time. I recommend staying at the BasiliQ Hotel, it’s right by the Basilica and you can get rooms that look right over the Christmas Market.
